The attribution of the present painting has been confirmed by Dr. Beck from a transparency: 'this fine late painting by Jan van Goyen is an important discovery' (private correspondence, 23 April 1999). He will illustrate the painting in the forthcoming second supplement to his catalogue raisonné of the artist's paintings.
