Lot Essay

As with many paintings by Breughel the Younger, the present work is thought to derive from a composition by his father, Pieter Brueghel I (see Marlier, op. cit., p. 205). The primary version is considered to be that in the John G. Johnson collection, the Philadelphia Museum of Art (ibid., p. 206, fig. 124). Other signed versions include that sold at Christie's, New York, 9 June 1978, lot 87A and the signed and dated work of 1620 in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, Inv. no. 911 (ibid., pp. 205-7 and 208-9, nos. 1-18)
