Lot Essay

The son of Joseph Heintz I, a court painter to Rudolf II in Prague, the younger Heintz trained in Augsburg under Matthäus Gundelach before returning to Venice where he was active for most of his life. He specialized in the depiction of Venetian festivals and masked events in which well-known Venetian sites are filled with naively characterized people reminiscent of those in etchings by Jacques Callot.
