Lot Essay

The present unpublished painting can be securely attributed to Torre and dated to circa 1650 on comparison with a number of recorded works by him executed while he was working in the studio of Simone Cantarini. These include the Adoration of the Magi in the Museo di S. Giuseppe dei Cappuccini, Bologna (a painting previously attributed to Cantarini), and The Holy Family in the Galleria Pallavicini, Rome (see E. Negro and M. Pirondini, La Scuola di Guido Reni, 1992, pp. 399 and 380, pls. 374 and 380).
