The last work to be isssued from Hunter's Castle Street private press (although imprint given as J. Richardson), after Hunter died while the work was in progress. Sir Everard Home, Hunter's pupil, brother-in-law and executor, finished the work and added the biography. Home subsequently refused to hand over Hunter's manuscripts to the College of Surgeons, but used them in preparing works to be published in his own name. In 1823 he destroyed all that remained of the archive.
