The Governor of Massachusetts Bay, Lord Bellomont, took up his appointment in 1695 with special instructions to suppress piracy along the colony's coast. William Kidd was given command of a privateer, the Adventure, and began the task. Excessive zeal caused Kidd to turn pirate himself, plundering ships of friendly powers.
