(Title and first text leaf with small stain, otherwise in fine condition). Later red calf, elaborately gilt (very slight rubbing to extremities, otherwise fine). FIRST EDITION. Theodore, a Frenchman from Lyons, was the first aeronaut to attempt a balloon ascension in Mexico. General Manuel de la Barrera requested that he attempt ascents in his bull ring of San Paulo. Theodore failed in his attempts and the general jailed him; he left the country in poverty after serving his sentence. The work contains accounts of the first ballon ascents in Cuba and of other early ascents in the Americas. Palau 331487. RARE.
