Lot Essay

This painting was executed circa 1884

William Charles Le Gendre (1856-1926) was the assistant manager of the banking house Brown Brothers in New York. During World War I he worked under President Wilson, and in 1915 became a delegate to the Pan American financial conference in Washington. William Le Gendre worked to establish a state police system as an active civic reformer in New York. He held postions as Treasurer of the American Social Science Association and President of the Calumet Club, and was also a member of the Reform and Union Clubs.
