Lot Essay

Born in Paris in 1829, Emile-François Chatrousse (d. 1896) first studied with the painter Abel de Pujol. In 1851, he became a pupil of the sculptor François Rude. From 1848 onwards, he exhibited at the Salon where he was awarded a medal in 1863, 1864 and 1865.

The bronze version of La Lecture is now housed in the Musée de Reims.
