WOODALL, John (1570-1643). The Surgeon's Mate on Military and Domestique Surgery. London: John Legate for Nicholas Bourne, 1655-53.

Engraved title and three further titles, dated 1653, to sections entitled "Viaticum", "A Treatise Declaring the Way of Preventing the Plague", and "A Treatise of Gangrena and Sphacelos", three (of four) engraved plates, folding letterpress table, several manuscript pages of notes bound in (incomplete: title mounted, with small losses; lacking D2-3 and the equestrian portait of Charles I; 170mm tear repaired on P3, with loss of several letters; 100mm tear on 3N4 repaired, crossing several words; lower right corner of 3E1 repaired, some light browning and dampstaining). 19th century half calf, marbled boards (rebacked, boards a little rubbed). Provenance: illegible inscription dated 1673 on verso of final leaf; Sir Thomas Longmore, Surgeon-General (engraved armorial bookplate on front pastedown; several pages of manuscript notes, including a copy of text from D2-3, bound in).
Third edition. The first edition was published in 1617, and the second in 1639. An early work on naval and military medicine. Among his contributions was the introduction of a conical trephine with a crown and center pin to allow accurate placement in trephination and the prevention of plunging.
