After the Galerie André exhibition, Dubuffet returned to painting, inventing the technique known as 'hautes pâtes' in which the surface of the painting is built up by the addition of sand, plaster and tar. In the following lots, Dubuffet translates this technique into lithography, repeatedly overprinting the images and thus building up the depth of the print's surface.
