As a collector, Dubuffet had for some time been interested in the art of the insane, of children and of so-called 'primitive' peoples. This he collectively called Art Brut. In December 1948, as a tribute to his interest in and growing collection of L'Art Brut, Dubuffet executed a series of woodcuts and linoleum cuts adopting a deliberately primitive style. The woodcuts were printed using carved camembert cheese boxes.
