In 1962, Dubuffet 'discovered' the fantastical world which he named Hourloupe, invented whilst doodling with a ballpoint pen. Individual cellular forms reminiscent of cloisonné enamel are filled with blocks of color or parallel lines of shading. In these prints the figure becomes almost totally suborned by the overall pattern and the palette becomes restricted to a few primary colors. After trying to continue with lithography, Dubuffet switched his attention to screenprinting, a method which could better parallel the enameled surfaces of the current paintings and sculpture.
