Bonnard enjoyed his mature years at Le Cannet celebrating the visual vigor of his surroundings and in works like Nature morte à la bouteille de vin rouge symbolizing the great French tradition of the Vie Bourgeoise. His personal vision, however, was itself anything but bourgeois. The ardently sensual colors and dusty rich corporality of the various edibles on the table jar strikingly with their unconventional positioning (think of Cézanne's precise, controlled placement and these victuals look as if the family has just finished the meal and Marthe not yet cleared the table). The perspective is equally disturbing yet intriguing, witness the line where the end of the white tablecloth slices across the top of the picture plane. Withal, however, there is a thrilling, luminous harmony. Dangerously placing a square within a rectangle, Bonnard skirts convention and the result is spontaneous rather than rigid. Nature morte à la bouteille de vin rouge in subject, composition and palette reprises Après le repas (Dauberville, no. 1330, sold at Christie's, New York, November 14, 1988, lot 27, $7,480,000)
