This pastel is a study for the oil painting of the same title done in 1893 (cf. L.R. Pissarro and L. Venturi, Camille Pissarro, son art--son oeuvre, Paris, 1939, no. 858). In the final version the two women sit closer together as they converse.

The Wildenstein Institute will include this pastel in their forthcoming supplement to the Pissarro catalogue raisonné.
