Lot Essay

The sitter in this painting is Jeanne Manguin, née Carette, whom the artist met in 1896 and married three years later. She was Manguin's most frequent model. Henri Matisse made an ink drawing of her in 1905-1906 (coll. Museum of Modern Art, New York).
