This watercolor is one of three recorded studies related to a painting of the same subject done in 1914. Gleizes telescopes the deep space inherent in this panoramic view by superimposing the landscape motifs, and at the same time implies distance by the use of pronounced diagonals. Later in 1914 Gleizes began to further simplify and flatten his compositions, and employed the disc (prefigured here in the form of the yellow sun) as a basic structural element.
