Lot Essay

This painting is a study for a portrait of the wife of Jacques Heim, the director of a fashion boutique for whom Sonia Delaunay (the artist's wife) produced fabric designs. In this study and later versions Mme Heim is portrayed wearing a shawl which Sonia created.
