Lot Essay

In 1961 Edward Quinn and Roland Penrose commissioned Picasso to produce ten drawings as designs for the front and back covers of their book Picasso à l'oeuvre, un étude photographique intime. The authors chose two drawings which were used when the book was published in Paris, 1965. The remaining eight designs (lots 373-380) remained in the artist's collection until about 1970.
