Lot Essay

The ten designs in this lot were commissioned by a cosmetic company for the creation of a series of women's nail decals. The imagery includes motifs familiar from Dalí's regular surrealist repetoire, as well as figurative compositions which are derived from zootropes, long printed strips of slightly varying images, which when placed in a rotating drum appear animated to the eye. The project was never placed in production.

Robert Descharnes has confirmed the authenticity of these gouaches.
