Lot Essay

The original, signed and dated 1638, on canvas, 125.6 x 174.7 cm, is in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, inv. no.1560 (J. Bruyn et. al., A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, 1989, III, pp.248/57, no.A123, ill.).
The subject is taken from Judges XIV:10-14, where is related how Samson, upon his wedding, told his guests a riddle, which they had to solve within seven days. On the seventh day the guests pressed the bride to wheedle the solution out of Samson. She did so and betrayed the answer to them.
