Lot Essay

(1) Camp Milligen was founded in 1886 on the Veluwe, north of Amersfoort, now near Nieuw Milligen
(2) the inscription on the mount identifies the officer as the English major Beith, who was presumably among the English troups accupying Middelburg, the artist's home town, in 1809
