Lot Essay

The serpentined, scalloped and embossed frame relates to a picturesque overmantel 'Chimney Piece' pattern published in T. Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd ed, l762, pl. CLXXIX; while its Chinese cresting of triple bell-hung canopies largely derives from his pattern for 'China Shelves', pl. CXLIII.
