Lot Essay

With its frame, pillars and stump feet enriched with Egyptian reeding, and its elliptical handle plates guarded with Egyptian sphynx and wreathed by Grecian ribbon-frets, it reflects the antique fashion promoted by Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1802. A similar chest was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 4 June 1998, lot 147.
