Lot Essay

The form of the table's columnar legs, with their fretted lambrequin and pad or club foot, remained popular throughout George II's reign; and features in a table sketch in Gillow of Lancaster's l760 Estimate Sketch Book, (L. Boynton, (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 3). A concertina-action card-table of this pattern, possibly its pair, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 11 February l999, lot 134. It too was fitted with the 'H. Tibats' hinges discussed by P. Thornton, 'A Signed Hinge', Furniture History, Leeds, l966, pp. 44-45.
