The padded rectangular seat with gros point needlework depicting roses in a cartouche, on elaborately carved acanthus cabriole legs, and scrolled feet, one leg with a crack, the side rail stamped '164' and with paper label inscribed 'S14164'
18½ in. (47 cm.) high; 26½ in. (67 cm.) wide; 22 in. (56 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The stool has serpentined and acanthus-enriched truss legs terminating in voluted scrolls in the manner of 'French Chair' patterns illustrated in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd ed., 1672, (pl. XXIII).
