A Napoleonic Prisoner Of War Model Of A 1st Rate Ship**
late 18th/early 19th century
The wooden hull planked over in bone and baleen with bone planked deck which have been fastened with copper pins. The model is fitted with 128 cannons which are turned from wood. Details include; a carved figure head of a woman, ornamental carvings and the bow and stem in floral rope and rosette motifs, along the sheer line is additional decorative rope carving which run aft to the quarter galleries and is also repeated at the chain plates. The quarter galleries and the transom are elaborately carved and pierced with various decorarive motifs, figures and balconies. Below the transom are a pair of braided pulls which work the retracting cannon system. Other details include fife rails, belfry two ship's boats rigged with lifting lines, deck grating, ladders, deck railings, skylight and numerous other details. The model is rigged with 3 masts and the lower sections are bound. The model is rigged with standing and running rigging which turn through ivory blocks and deadeyes. The model is mounted on a bone and baleen stand (later) and displayed in a mahogany and glass case with bone finials.
