2o (456 x 361 mm). 36 hand-colored lithographic plates after John and Elizabeth Gould (assisted by Edward Lear) by C. Hullmandel (occasional spotting, heavier on 6 plates, folding plate creased and with tears at edges). Letterpress title, dedication leaf, preface, subscribers list, list of plates and descriptions (scattered spotting thoughout). Contemporary green hard-grained morocco, richly gilt, turn-ins gilt, edges gilt, by Hering (hinges lightly rubbed, some black marks on covers).
FIRST EDITION of Gould's second monograph. Gould writes in his Introduction, "In selecting the Family of Trogons as the subject of my second monograph, I was influenced by the full conviction, not only that it was one fraught with interest, but that much was left buried in obscurity, which when brought to light would materially tend to the advancement of Ornithology." The monograph was published in three parts, illustrating a total of thirty-four species, including twelve more than had previously been known. The majority were native to the Americas, and of the remainder ten were from India and the Indian Islands and one from Africa.
