Lot Essay

See W.G. Gulland, Chinese Porcelain, London, 1918 where the author notes 'The long-life symbol (swastika) is a mystic diagram of wide diffusion and great antiquity. It is mentioned in the Ramayana and found in the rock temples of India, as well as amongst all the Buddhistic people of Asia. In China it is regarded as the symbol of Buddha's heart, i.e. of the Esoteric doctrines of Buddhism, and it is the special mark of all deities worshipped by the lotus school...'

The addition of the stylised flower-heads possibly a composite lotus in our example suggests it was made for a Buddhist, possibly of the lotus school.
