Lot Essay

A similar bottle with green overlay from the J & J Collection attributed to the Yangzhou School is illustrated in the Loan Exhibition, Catalogue, Christie's, London, October 1987, no. 31.

The orchid and the rock combined embodies the virtues of 'fragrant' and 'strong'. See Marsha Weidner, Views from Jade Terrace, New York, 1988, p. 74, regarding the revered poet Su Shi who wrote 'Spring orchids are like beautiful women, the long swaying leaves of the orchid curve out as if wafting the lovely fragrance of the flower through the air'.
