Lot Essay

See C.A.S. Williams, Outlines of Chinese Symbolism & Art Motifs, New York, 1976, pp. 320-321 where the author notes, "The peony is one of the four flowers which represent the four seasons. Peony being for Spring. It is sometimes known as Hua Wang or King of flowers. It is looked upon as the flower of the Yang principle - that of brightness and masculinity."
For another example with black inclusions, see Christie's, Hong Kong, 30 April - 2 May 1995, lot 1349, also illustrated on the front cover of the I.C.S.B.S., Journal, March, 1981.
For a similar bottle without the slightly flaring neck of this example, see Sotheby's, Hong Kong, 29 April 1992, lot 569; see another sold at Sotheby's, New York, 3 October 1980, lot 248.
