Lot Essay

Although this table stylistically dates from the first quarter of the 18th century, it would appear that the column has been re-used from a piece of furniture dating to perhaps 100 years earlier. The resulting form is peculiarly distinctive. A related column, recorded as a fragment of a bedpost, is illustrated in Victor Chinnery Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge 1979, page 184, fig. 2.201.
