A gold example of this medal was presented to Mary Todd Lincoln by a committee representing 40,000 French citizens. Funds were raised by subscriptions limited to 2-Sous per person. Napoleon III would not allow the medal to be struck in France, so after some delay it was struck in Switzerland. It is one of the rarest Lincoln pieces, listed by Captain Andrew Zabriskie as number one on his list in the American Journal of Numismatics.
