Lady Juliana Caroline Frances Knox (1825-1906)
An album of original botanical watercolours, titled Maderia Flowers [Madeira: 1849-1851]. 2° (540 x 395mm). The album comprising 150 botanical water- and body-colour drawings of varying sizes, 3 double-page, 2 smaller botanical watercolour drawings, one botanical pencil drawing, 4 botanical pencil drawings heightened in white, one also heightened in watercolour, and also 4 topographical drawings: one watercolour and pencil drawing heightened in white, a pencil drawing heightened in white, and 2 watercolour and pencil drawings, inscribed 'copied from a sketch by Lady S.V. Harcourt', the majority signed with initials, some dated (ranging from September 5th to July 31st) and captioned, occasionally annotated, the majority captioned with Latin and English names in a formal gothic hand, all laid down to the album leaves. Contemporary crimson morocco gilt by Caldwell Brothers, the boards with central gilt tool of flowers in an urn, within a gilt roll-tooled floral panel, the upper board titled 'Madeira Flowers', gilt and blind roll-tooled floral borders, gilt roll-tooled floral and foliate board edges and turn-ins, the gilt spine divided by 5 raised bands into 6 compartments decorated with floral and foliate tools, gilt edges (extremities a little rubbed, boards a little scuffed and marked, spine lightly faded and cracked, torn with small loss at foot). Provenance: Lady Juliana Knox; General Sir Edward Walter Forestier-Walker K.C.B. (1812-1881, married Lady Knox 1862, armorial bookplate); by descent, to the present owner.
A FINE COLLECTION BY A GIFTED AMATEUR, DEPICTING THE EXOTIC FLORA OF MADEIRA. The majority of the botanical watercolour drawings extend to the size of the album leaf, and were drawn while Lady Flora Knox, the daughter of Thomas, second Earl of Ranfurly, was travelling in Madeira, between 1849 and 1851.
