SAMSON & Cie. Atelier

An album of 48 original botanical designs for porcelain. [Paris: 1845 of later]. 2° (428 x 330mm). 48 original watercolour drawings on paper, 260 x 178mm. and smaller, mounted on 32 leaves. Contemporary red half morocco, moiré cloth covers, gilt.

A RARE COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR DESIGNS FOR PORCELAIN, BY THE SAMSON FACTORY OF PARIS. These finished designs were apparently intended as both a source of reference and a set of patterns for the porcelain painters to work from. The watercolours take the form of variously sized vignettes composed of bouquets of two or more flowers. The plants have a stylised beauty to them that hinders identification, but a number of species are nonetheless recognizable: Roses, Tulips, Carnations and Pinks, Violas, Honeysuckle, Bluebells, Asters. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established at Saint-Maurice near Paris in 1845. They became known for a wide range of porcelain and faience but specialised in high quality copies of earlier or foreign wares. Amongst the factories that Samson borrowed from were early Derby and Sèvres, blue and white Delftware, Chinese Armorial porcelain, Meissen figures and 'Gold Anchor' Chelsea.
