London: For the Author, 1852-61]. 6 parts only (of 25, numbers 3,8,15, 16, 18 and 21), 2° (538 x 370mm). 71 hand-coloured lithographic plates only (of 80) by Gould and Richter, printed by Hullmandel and Walton. (Most plates and text detached, plates spotted.) Contemporary half cloth (worn and loose).

A representative selection of images from the monograph on the bird family that was arguably closest to Gould's heart. The complete work, published between June 1849 and September 1861, included 360 plates. A supplement with a further 58 plates appeared between 1880 and 1887.
