A Painted and Gilt Manuscript Cover
Tibet, circa 13th/14th Century
Gilt and carved in deep relief in a recessed panel with, from left to right, Amitayus and Yellow Jhambala below, Shakyamuni and Black Jhambala, Prajnaparamita and Mahakala, Avalokiteshvara and Lhamo, and Padmasambhava, all on stepped plinths with elaborately carved mandorlas, within a broad red lacquered border, the reverse painted in polychrome and carved with large diamond shaped reserves surrounded by stylized flame and lotus petal borders, one side carved and gilt with kirttimukha mask

Lot Essay

The presence of Padmasambhava indicates that this manuscript cover was likely used in a Nyingma monastery.
