A Fine Well-Carved Yaozhou Conical Bowl
Northern Song Dynasty
The interior crisply carved with a single peony blossom borne on a leafy stem below an incised line border, with another line border above the simply carved band of narrow petals on the exterior, covered inside and out with a greyish-olive glaze pooling to a dark color in the recesses and ending at the top of the small ring foot burnt reddish brown in the firing

Lot Essay

Compare a yaozhou bowl carved with similar decoration in the interior, illustrated by Feng Xian Ming in Zhongguo gutaoci lunwen ji (Essays on Chinese Old Ceramics), Hong Kong 1987, p. 226, no. 5; and another, with a plain exterior, included in the exhibition, Selected pieces from the Collections of the ROC Society of Art Collectors, 1989, p. 45, no. 29.
