The present painting is a partial copy after Saint Peter and St. Paul in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, which was engraved by Diego di Astor in 1608. In that painting of circa 1605-8 and a version of it in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg executed circa 1587-92 the figure of Saint Paul is thought to be a portrayal of the artist himself. The same face also appears in a number of other paintings, including the Saint Paul in the collection of the Marquess de Narros, Madrid and a Portrait of a Man in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
