This caricature derives from a portrait of Bernhardt, painted by Jules- Bastien Lépage (Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 28 November 1980, lot 45) during the last quarter of the 19th century, when she had assumed international fame and the accolade of being one of the world's foremost actresses.
