The Bristol has always had a reputation as a car that was superbly designed and manufactured from top quality materials regardless of cost. This was a tenet developed from the philosophy associated with the company's history of aeroplane, engine and aviation technology. Following the armistice at the end of WWII, the Bristol Aeroplane Company acquired manufacturing rights to certain BMW models and engines, and with an over capacity of skilled man-power, it was decided to go into motor car production. Within a remarkably short time this newly-formed Car Division was producing vehicles of a very high specification commencing with the "400" series of models available from the autumn of 1946, setting new standards for performance economy and comfort.

After ten years the problems within the aviation industry dictated that the Car Division become a separate company which was formed by Sir George White, descendant of the founder of the British Aeroplane Company and the ex-fighter Pilot and racing driver Tony Crook.. Upon the retirement of the former, Tony Crook became the sole proprietor, a position which he holds to this day. During this early period, new models were introduced along similar lines of the range but with improved specification, handling, performance and styling and the newest "406" model became the last of the line to be fitted with the engines manufactured from the Filton plant in Bristol. It featured an enlarged capacity engine bored out to 2.2 litres, and some 300 examples were produced between 1958 to 1961.

This particular car was acquired by the vendor in 1986 and was originally supplied through Tony Crook Limited of Esher Surrey. It has been carefully maintained and looked after during which time it has undergone various recommissioning and restoration as required, including a complete bottom-end overhaul, new clutch-plate & thrust, carburettors rebuilt, dynamo replaced with an alternator, the original HMV/400T radio serviced, and heater system overhauled etc. It is expected that a new MOT certificate will have been obtained and the car is currently taxed albeit free of duty. Also included are previous MoT test certificates, instruction manual and V-5 documentation which shows that the registration number 406 KPC is retained original to the car, which represent a good useable example of the marque.
