Dargestellt ist eine italianisierende Hafenszene. Links ist eine russische Fregatte zu erkennen, rechts an der Kste die sogenannte "Lanterna" von Genua, ein Leuchtturm, den Hackert 1768 während der Reise von Frankreich nach Rom besichtigt haben kann. Es handelt sich bei der steilen Kstenlandschaft jedoch nicht um die Umgebung Genuas. Die Studiosignatur "a Roma" ist ein weiterer Hinweis darauf, dass es sich bei dem Bild nicht um eine topographisch lokalisierbare Ansicht handelt (C.Nordhoff und H.Reimer, Jakob Philipp Hackert, Berlin, 1994, Bd.II, S.28f.), sondern um eine Idealdarstellung einer sdlichen Kste, zu der das folgende Bild möglicherweise als Pendant entstand (Nordhoff/Reimer, loc.cit.).
