Lot Essay

A drawing for this miniature in black chalk and stump, half-length 113/4 x 9¼in., was with Agnew's in 1961 (illustrated Country Life, 2 February 1961). It is inscribed with the title as given above, together with 'of Albemarle Street' and partly illegible inscription which appears to include a reference to 'Court Dress Maker'. Another related drawing was in volume 5 of the fourth series of Butleigh Court sketchbooks which, unlike those now in the British Museum, was acquired by Agnew's in 1953 and subsequently broken up (a photocopy of this volume is in the British Museum Print Room).
