PERMISSION FOR AN EX-OFFICER TO DO BUSINESS IN UNION-OCCUPIED TENNESSEE

A document written not long after the celebrated victory at Vicksburg and a month before the battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge: "Col. P.J. Sullivan, late of the 48th Ohio Vol[unteer]s is hereby authorized to remain within this Department and to practice his profession or engage in any business consistent with existing orders. This is to recommend Col. Sullivan to the Dist[rict] & Port commanders for such facilities as are allowed to loyal men..."
