[228] (23/10), from Esdras I (Apocryphal), chapters iii.8-v.14. Type 1:146(138)G. Double column. 42 lines. Rubricated: headlines and chapter numeration in alternating red and blue lombards, large initial I in red with marginal extension, 2-line initial P in blue, red capital strokes. No visible watermark. Light foxing, very slight marginal soiling, very slight showthrough of rubricated headline, 2 small rust stains on verso, soft crease to lower fore-corner. Tipped into a copy of A. Edward Newton, A Noble Fragment, New York: Gabriel Wells 1921, folio, red morocco, covers gilt-panelled, upper cover and spine lettered in gilt, turn-ins gilt-ruled, by Riviere and Son, upper joint cracked, corners and extremities of spine slightly scuffed. Provenance: Maria Elisabeth Augusta von Sulzbach (1721-1794, wife of Carl Theodore, Electoral Prince of the Palatinate, subsequently Electoral Prince of Bavaria) -- Mannheim, Hofbibliothek -- Munich, Royal Library (their duplicate sale, 1832, sold for 350 guilders) -- Robert Curzon, Baron Zouche (1810-1873, and by descent until sold:) -- Sotheby's 9 November 1920, lot 70, to Joseph Sabin; sold by him to -- Gabriel Wells, who broke up the copy, dispersing it in single leaves, many of them accompanied by A. Edward Newton's essay, as here, and in larger fragments.
