James Forbes (1749-1819) went to India at an early age, and compiled voluminous notes and original drawings, ultimately filling 150 folio volumes, from which his Oriental Notes was compiled. Southey's extended review is generally quite complimentary, and retells at some length a number of Forbes's quite exotic travels and adventures.
