Each of shield shape, with elongated neck flanked by scroll handles, decorated in white slip on grey with branches of wild-flowers, grasses, berries and insects, alternating with brown decorated with Bérainesque panels, edged with green bands enriched with gilt, on conforming socle foot

Lot Essay

Thomas Mellor worked at Mintons from 1872-1885 and was trained in the art of pâte-sur-pâte under L. Solon. He specialized in classical type ornament which is demonstrated on the brown panels of the present example. Mellor subsequently worked for J. Wedgwood & Sons Ltd.
