Jean Jules Frère (d. 1906) studied under Cordier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, before exhibiting a plaster model of the present work at the Salon in 1878. The work was initially cast in bronze by Hohwiller and purchased by the city of Cambrai, the sculptor's native town. Chanteur oriental was subsequently edited in two sizes by Thiébaut, the present cast being an example of the larger version.
