A large French carved walnut sideboard-cabinet
Circa 1880
The breakfront top with central canopy centred by a minstrel, on winged grotesque acanthus-carved caryatid supports, the sides each with acanthus-carved urn finial to the corners and centred to one side by a townsman and to the other with a cleric, with central panelled door carved in high relief with the capture of Joan of Arc, with drawer below, flanked to each side by a further door carved with a grotesque above a cartouche with scrolling acanthus surround, with gargoyle-mounted foliate columns between and gargoyles and trailing foliage to each end, supported below by a townsman mounted on a tapering column, the lower section with three fluted frieze drawers, above a central pair of small doors, each carved with a townsman, with recess below, flanked to the sides with a further door carved with two figures in an interior, divided by acanthus and fruit pendants and with a drapery-hung ram's mask monopodiae to each end, on stepped base and flat bun feet
