Lot Essay

Numerous 19th-century Rennaissance style carvings of this type are in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, founded in 1851 as the South Kensington Museum. These carvings were copied after period material by the students of the Royal College of Art, who drew on the living encyclopedic collection in the hope of raising the level of contemporary British design.
